Ephesus – 10 April 2024

And so to Türkiye, docking at the port of Kusadasi. . .
Our morning excursion with Tahir, our guide of 44 years
took us to the ancient Roman city of Ephesus. While the history of the city predates the Romans, destruction of a previous city on the site has left little archaeological evidence.
A map of the site is useful (for me) to locate the photos.

Our meanderings took us from top right to bottom left on this map

The main purpose of our visit was the terrace houses of the Roman elite – on the map shown as Hillside Houses. In many ways they resemble the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompei.

As with most sites in the region cats rule, this one looking very much the guardian of Ephesus . . .

His/her beauty matched only by . . .

We noticed a lot of “preening” being carried out as the Instagram worthy shots were being taken!

From the top then . . .

Remains of the Varius Baths – the significance of the these being the heating and reticulation system using water supplied through a sophisticated system of earthenware pipes

Adjacent to which was the Odeon- not for performances but at which citizens could represent their views to the governor

Note the recovered earthenware pipes – still in Ok condition after 2000 years
Pollio Fountain – yeah, I know it doesn’t look like one – another monument to self by one of the Roman emperors

Aargh – people and lots of them, and this is just the start of tourist season!!

Temple of Hadrianthe columns are reconstructed but most of the head of the gate is original – were there “plans” from which it was possible to piece together the stonework?
Where the important business was transacted- cleanup was by means of a vinegar soaked sponge!!!

Detour to the terrace homes of the Roman “elite” – the photos tell their own story . . .

Middle class elite
Upper class elite

Including some beautifully preserved glass mosaics . . .

Below: More Greek gods??

OK – so it is an iPhone photo, taken through the glass walkway from 10m up! T’was funny to see others laying their phones on the glass after Woss took this – needed a little editing to bring up the colour!!
Just four columns and lintels – on the left is the huge roof covering the Roman homes excavations

I can’t understand why, but this seems to be what most people come to Ephesus for – the Library of Celcus – impressive huh . .

Mazeu-Mithridates Gate – portal to the Agora of Ephesus
Stele setting out the trading regulations in the agora
Don’t forget to look back – the Marble Road looking back to the Library
The Grand Theatre with capacity for 25,000 backsides

Oops – I almost forgot Nike . . .

One response to “Ephesus – 10 April 2024”

  1. Very impressive, but if that is the quiet time would not like to see it busy!!
