19 March – More bloody temples and bloody hot

The locals tell us that there are two seasons – hot and bloody hot – not sure which this is but the roads are frickin’ bumpy as I write this en route Siem Reap to Kompong Cham where we embark on Viking Saigon to navigate the Mekong River. Hats off to our bus driver.

First stop today – Bayon Temple with much restoration underway initially sponsored by France now under the auspices of Japan. The challenge is to match the stone just lying on the ground to the temple structure that was in the 12th century. Much work is also being done to restore foundations – subsidence over the centuries combined with poor choice of raw material is to blame for much of the degradation. Nature, in the form of tropical vegetation, has also wrought havoc, particularly in the temple of Ta Prohm.

The gate was built to fit an elephant but not our bus!!
Restoration of the guardians of the gate courtesy of France
Yep – tourist season!!
Little do those pesky tourists know what I can do with Apple Pencil!!
It has been suggested that the images are likenesses of King Jayavarman VII who was responsible for the construction of the Bayon and Ta Prohm temples when Angkor Wat was abandoned

Probably a pair of Apsara dancers immortalised in relief
The reliefs depict Jayavarman’s military victories against Siam and Champa and everyday lives of Khmer people
Evidence of some of the rehabilitation work in the foreground

And then to Ta Prohm – where the jungle is ripping the temples apart . . .

And on the other facade – see next photo – this gallery has been restored from this condition

And then Gaia makes a statement

Look closely . . .
And our wonderful guide, Raksa

  1. loving your blog Fred. Sounds like all your sweat glands are in perfect working order 🤣🤣

  2. Honestly Fred, Temples do nothing for me, no matter how old or what their history is. I/we try to avoid them.

Great photos, you won’t forget them. Joan.

    1. Yeah – it is getting to be a bit ABT – I think we are over the “worst” of it – ha ha. That said the buildings themselves are beautiful – I have the Royal Palace photos to post – I bet you can’t wait!!
