Wet and miserable in the Hague this afternoon – perfect for staying indoors and updating travel blog . .
5 October – a birthday remembered – and after cruising the evening before from Köln and morning in the Rhine Delta Viking Vali docked at Kinderdijk – another UNESCO World Heritage site/cultural landscape. The locality is dotted with numerous working windmills – molen – of varying styles and sizes. Among the shore excursion options we chose a visit to a working post mill on a vintage 1896 barge, the Jantina, property of Viking cruises.
The mills date as far back as 17th century and served as water pumps to keep the surrounds drained. They are still in working condition as they act as a backup in the event of failure of the modern pumping station. The original reservoir systems dating to the 14th century are still intact.
