A Day in Delft

A few weeks ago now, but a certain person has asked me to fill in some holes in the blog!!

8.30 am on board the “skinny” #1 tram direct to Delft – 40 minutes later, walking to the south east corner of the city of islands, canals and bridges – first stop (apart from numerous photos of canals) was the Oostpoort – old city gate dating from the 15th century – last surviving of 8 gates in the old city wall.

Guardians of the city or just enjoying the autumn sunshine? – they were the only sign of “life” at 9am!
Morning golden hour light

These days the city is being guarded by a flock of ducks, provided with their own canal exit ramps

Far preferable to throwing them in the canal . . .
Around here is where Johannes Vermeer lived and worked

Market Square – City Hall and Nieuwe Kerk

New Church – 1396 – 1496 and the burial location for all royal family since William the Silent in 1584 – his mausoleum below
Waiting for the shutterbug to finish!!

With a modest little organ – this was the largest of 3!
Here lies the body of? Macabre burial stone . .
Oldest stone built building in Delft dating from 1505 – now the office of the Delfland Water Authority
Lunch in the company of . . .
Yes, I did have a beer with lunch, but this bell tower is 2m out of vertical – corrections were made as it was being built so the spires are the only truly vertical part. De Oude Kerk of 1505
